I use composition notebooks. I hate 3-ring binders.

My notebooks are usually 50% of their class grade. The other 50% are assessments. They keep all notes, assignments, labs, etc. in their notebook.

Correctness
4 - Demonstrates a thorough understanding of the subject matter
3 - Demonstrates a general awareness of concepts
2 - Demonstrates a limited awareness of concepts
1 - Demonstrates a minimal understanding in discussion of concepts

Higher-Order thinking

I use 3-subject or 5-subject Mead 5-Star Notebooks. The ISN counts for 25% of their quarterly grade.

My rubric looks like this:

Overall Organization/Neatness:
25 points: Work is very organized; pages are attached securely; left side/ right side order in tact; pages are numbered
20 points: Work is organized; pages are loose; left side/right side order in tact; pages are numbered
15 points: Work is a little confusing; left side/right side order in tact; pages are numbered
10 points: Work has little order; left side/right side order in tact; no page numbers
5 points: Work has no order; pages are missing; left side/right side order is not correct; No page numbers

Completeness for Right Side:
25 points: All work is clear, complete, detailed. Anyone could use as study guide.
20 points: Most work is done, but some assignments are missing.
15 points: Work and notes are mostly done, but 3-4 assignments are missing.
10 points: Work and notes are partially done; 5-6 assignments are missing.
5 points: Much of the work is missing or unreadable

Completeness for Left Side:
25 points: Work is clear, focused, reveals personal reflection.
20 points: Work is clear, focused, reflective. 1-2 assignments missing.
15 points: Work is sufficient and reflective. 3-4 assignments missing.
10 points: Work is sparse, but shows reflection. 5-6 assignments missing.
5 points: left side is incomplete or not reflective.

Follows Assignment Directions:
25 points: directions consistently followed
